Two mountain peaks rising above a sea of cloud
Journey 001 // North Carolina // October 2026

APPALACHIAN
FOG

A day of wet roads, early autumn and waiting for the mountains to appear.

FIELD LOG // 001

Rain was the plan. Fog became the trip.

The mountains spent most of the day disappearing, which meant the photographs had to rely on roads, rivers, trees and brief openings in the cloud to give the eye somewhere to land.

Two mountain peaks rising above a sea of cloud
08:06 // FRAME 01

The mountains showed up for about five minutes.

Most of the morning was white. Then two ridges pushed just high enough through the cloud deck to become the entire photograph.

Forest road disappearing into luminous fog
08:41 // FRAME 02

Keep walking toward the bright part.

The forest did the framing. The road did the directing. The fog gave the frame somewhere to go.

Stone steps, a tree and a fallen log disappearing into fog
09:12 // FRAME 03

Almost.

The steps and the fallen tree built a path through the foreground, but the weather swallowed the payoff. I still like the frame because it shows what the day actually felt like.

Wet trail through a dense early-autumn forest
09:35 // FRAME 04

Not every frame needs a mountain.

Sometimes the atmosphere is the subject. Wet leaves, dark rhododendron and just enough fog between the trunks.

River winding through a colorful foggy gorge
11:18 // FRAME 05

Finally, somewhere for the eye to go.

The river solved the composition. It enters the frame, bends through the autumn forest and disappears into the same weather that had been following us all morning.

Long exposure water moving through a rocky autumn gorge
12:03 // FRAME 06

Rock, water, color.

The scene was busy, so I used the rock and water to simplify it into a foreground route instead of trying to photograph the entire gorge.

Curving gravel road disappearing into foggy forest
13:27 // FRAME 07

One more road.

I keep finding roads in my favorite photographs. They are an easy promise to the viewer: follow this and something is waiting.

Blue mountain ridges layered in fog
18:42 // FRAME 08

Blue hour.

No obvious subject. Just distance, weather and layers. It works better as part of the story than as the story itself.

Bare trees reflected in dark blue water beneath fog
19:04 // FRAME 09

The last frame.

The dead trees gave the evening a subject when the mountains would not. Their reflections finished the shape.
